Research copilot for hard questions. A patron asks something obscure (“what’s the legal status of grazing rights on Michigan state trust land?”). The librarian queries a local Llama 3.3 70B or gpt-oss-120b, gets a structured starting point with terms to verify, then validates against authoritative sources. Faster than starting cold, no patron query sent anywhere.

Multilingual reference. Real-time translation for ESL patrons — immigration paperwork, government forms, medical instructions. Cloud translation services log everything; running a model locally means an undocumented patron can ask about an ICE notice without that query landing in a vendor’s audit trail. Materially different threat model in 2026.

Reader’s advisory. A local RAG system indexed on the library’s catalog plus the patron’s (opted-in) circulation history can generate genuinely personalized recommendations. Same task that Goodreads/Amazon do — but without surrendering the patron’s reading taste to a surveillance ad network.

Plain-language rewrites of government documents. Medicare letters, IRS notices, court summonses, benefits eligibility paperwork. Librarians do this work informally every day at the desk. A local LLM with a “explain this at a sixth-grade reading level” prompt accelerates it without the privacy compromise of cloud tools.

This is our disruptor with graphics showing a type of switchboard for our Operator Agent performing the sorting of work that can be performed locally vs through an API engaging costly cloud based services. This is the modern version of days when you had to speak to an Operator to make a long distance call and you thought carefully before saying: “Hello Operator, long distance please.”

Routine work stays local on the GX10; only the hard jobs go out to the API; the user gets warned before tokens run away.

Vertical Use Cases

Public library reference desk. A librarian asks the AI to summarize a government report or draft a plain-language explainer of a local ordinance. ApI Switchboard recognizes this as routine work and runs it on the branch’s GX10 — patron questions never leave the building, and the library’s API bill doesn’t move. Only a genuinely novel research question gets escalated to the cloud.

Trade association member services. Members query a chatbot over the association’s standards, bylaws, and back catalog. ApI Switchboard serves those answers from a local RAG index on the GX10 instead of paying per-token to send proprietary member data to a cloud provider on every question.

Labor union organizing and grievances. Drafting communications, searching grievance history, summarizing contract language — all data that must not sit on a third party’s servers. Cost triage for developers. Routes cheap, high-volume work (classification, extraction, embeddings, first-draft generation) to the local stack and reserves the paid API for the few calls that truly need a frontier model.
